The objective of this project is to capitalize on an emerging market of Dutch towers and make it so users can use it at home and work. The product needs to maximize material, size, services, and maintenance. It also has to have a balance of utility, aesthetics, manufacturability, shipping, durability and sanitation.
I intend to follow the principles of emotional design for this project. The term is attributed to Luis Barragan and Mathias Goeritz who were frustrated with the “cold functionalism of modernism” (dezeen). The principles of emotional design as stated by architectural digest are to evoke emotion in the viewer, create a sense of calm, and make the user feel happy, uplifted and energized. This is done by embracing simplicity and looking into the user’s connection with the product (or service, system or experience). The forms have evolved and have become integrated into the modern design from when Barragan and Goeritz coined the term, but it still embraces light and shadow and utilizes colours and raw textures as well.
I also looked into the history of Dutch coffee and found that it was developed sometime in the 17th century in the Netherlands; however, it’s only when dutch colonialism travelled to Asia that it was coined “Dutch coffee”. Today the biggest market in this style of coffee is in Asia and the style of coffee is also referred to as Kyoto coffee.
IDEATION SKETCHES
My user group can be any individual who is interested in dutch towers and is passionate about coffee. I want to employ principles from emotional design to connect the visuals of the tower back to its history and origins. This adds another level and dimension to the coffee drinking experience as it takes a nod to its origins. The design will also be visually appealing which will be what initially attracts the individual to the product. Sketches 1 and 2 are meant to remind us of the Netherlands and the origins of Dutch coffee. Design 3-10 are referencing Asian motifs and utilize textures to again connect back to the origins of dutch coffee. However, for designs 3-10 I also utilized zen design principles and brought in some zen garden references to also emphasize the calm and tranquillity we get from the process of making coffee. Sketches 11-13 are meant to convey the idea that making dutch coffee is a long process and is a labour of love. And lastly Designs 14 and 15 are meant to evoke a sense of energy, like how coffee provides energy, and again connect back to emotional design.
